Name: King Perceon IV Gardener
Age: 22 (B. 177)
Kingdom: The Reach
Position: King of the Reach
Prior Position: Crown Prince of the Reach
Background:
Prince Perceon, the firstborn child of King Grayson Gardener his wife, Queen Lena, was a frail and sickly baby. While he survived beyond his infancy, contrary to the predictions of the King's Maester, he remained a victim of regular bouts of illness that left him a physically weak and small child for his age. This hampered him in the physical activities such as riding, wrestling, and training in arms that his father forced him into from an early age, and he was never the equal of the children of his own age group. Eventually Perceon was moved down to train with children a year his younger, but even among those his junior he was regularly physically overpowered with great ease, a humiliating feat for the youth and a source of massive frustration for his father. While his father and the master at arms attempted to resolve the problem of the boy's weakness by doubling Perceon's hours in training compared to the other youngsters, this seemed to only have the adverse affect of wearing him out and leaving him exposed to yet another lengthy period of illness. While in bed, Perceon was often capable of little but the study of texts on the history of the Reach and it's neighboring kingdoms. Eventually, reading to pass the time turned into reading out of interest, and the boy began to develop an impressive knowledge of the deeds of his ancestors. Even more impressive to the maester's caring for him was the child's apparent interest into the factors that contributed to the successes and failures of the old Gardener kings. Soon, even when in states of good health, Perceon would do little when he was free from the training regime imposed by his father than pore over old texts detailing numbers of levies raised in a certain campaign or accounts of a particular year's harvest. Such interests were not popular with the other children of his age, who preferred to dream of their futures as great lords or knights, but Perceon was clever enough to recognize talk of stewardship would win him no friends, so he told his peers tales of the great warriors of the past that he had come across in studies. While mocked for his weak swordsmanship and poor riding, his storytelling skills did something to win Perceon a reputation as a decent enough companion in non-martial pursuits.
By his eleventh nameday, the physical training regime that had been imposed on the young Prince when he was healthy seemed to have been of some worth, as while he remained frail he was no longer the image of a walking skeleton and he began to enjoy longer periods of good health. While by this point his younger brother Geralt was already demonstrating exceptional martial skill, and seemed to enjoy the majority of their father's affection, King Grayson continued to hope that both his sons could yet be the great warriors. Perceon was moved back up to train with those his own age, but while the boy was making clear efforts to pick up the skills of combat, it was something he was ill suited for. The boy understood the basics of swordsmanship and riding, but remained physically weaker than was desirable, and was as uninspired a warrior as his father was a general. At twelve, Perceon was sent out to squire for Lord Artos Oakheart, in the hope that a new environment and the duties of this position would enamor him more with knighthood and reinvigorate his martial capacity. Perceon performed his duties as a squire capably, and saw action during the conflict between House Oakheart and House Crakehall that occurred when he was sixteen years of age. Perceon's performance in the skirmishes was entirely unremarkable, which for him was an impressive accomplishment. However, following the cessation of the hostilities, he soon fell seriously ill again and had to return to Highgarden.
Ultimately despairing of his son's capacity to become a warrior, King Grayson decided that the boy would have to excel at something useful. Perceon began to be seen at court regularly, and proved a more successful socialite than a warrior. He was sent on several diplomatic missions to the Stormlands, and later traveled with his sister Melissa to Dorne on one occasion, generally managing to avoid illness and serving capably in his diplomatic capacity. At the age of eighteen, he was married to the sixteen year old Brynna Tarly, his betrothed. What followed was widely known to be an unhappy marriage for both partners, as Perceon did not live up to Brynna's ideal of knightly prowess, and Perceon considered his wife to be something of a dullard. Perceon was relieved of this unfortunate marriage though further misfortune at the age of twenty one, when both Brynna and the child she was birthing died in the birthing bed. While Perceon had never cared greatly for his wife, he reacted with appropriate sorrow to avoid offending the Tarlys. Furthermore, those who knew him well recognized he was genuinely upset by the loss of his child, and for well over half a year he was slower to smile and quicker to excuse himself from events. Not one to feel sorry for himself forever though, and desiring to continue to demonstrate his worth to his family, Perceon spent the second half of 198 travelling about the Reach, visiting major and minor lords alike and listening to their concerns, promising assistance where he was able and conveying appropriate condolences when there was little House Gardener could practically do. During his travels, Perceon was also known, on occasion, to speak with the smallfolk to learn of things occurring in the Reach the nobility may have been ignorant of. On the completion of this circuit of the Reach, Perceon returned to Highgarden where he has committed himself to overseeing administrative tasks others in his family have less appetite for.
