Backstory:
Prince Geralt Gardener was the second born child of King Grayson Gardener and Queen Lena. Unlike his elder brother, an aspiring heart impatient in the failing body which imprisoned it, Geralt seemed born to continue the chivalric legacy of the knights of the Reach. Though a year Perceon's junior, in the road at least he often took the elder role, protecting and encouraging his frail and sickly sibling when their father's often overbearing expectations became a detriment to his health. Though he was only passable at his studies with the maester, Geralt shone in the yard, displaying preternatural ability with sword and lance, as if the legacy of the Reach carried in his very blood.
When he was of age, he was sent to squire for the famed Ser Garrett Costayne, where he further honed his martial abilities and became a student of the ways of war in the frequent border skirmishes against the Dornish, Westerners, Ironborn, and bandits; wherever the Order of the Green Hand was called to serve. He received his spurs at 15 and was offered a spot into the Order of the Green Hand shortly after, content riding the roads with his knightly brothers and maintaining order in his father's lands. In fact, these were the heights of the young knight's ambition. He never envied his elder brother's position, as a knight belonged in the saddle not on a throne, despite often being treated as the de facto heir during the worst of Perceon's periods of ill health. His expectations were that eventually his father would arrange him a marriage with a high lord's daughter, he would be awarded a moderate stout keep with little responsibility, participate in tourneys during times of peace, and continue his efforts in the Order of the Green Hand until his dying day. Fate had other designs.
When the heir to the Hightower was slain in a border skirmish with the West, it negated the previously arranged betrothal between him and Princess Melissa Gardener. Seeing an opportunity, King Grayson arranged for the marriage of Geralt to the new heir to Oldtown, Lady Alyssa Hightower. Prince Geralt did his duty as ever, but was not thrilled; the Hightower more responsibility than he desired and his bookish wife apparently the only woman who did not swoon at the sight of a Knight of the Green Hand. They have been wed a year, Prince Geralt known to take every opportunity he can to escape the city an ride on chivalric missions with his knightly brothers.
