It has been five hundred forty years since Valyria vanished, swallowed in the wrath of the Doom. The only known survivors, the rogue Targaryens, sat on their island of Dragonstone for two centuries, their dragons a familiar sight to any who plied the waters of the Narrow Sea.
Over two hundred years ago, the dragons left the island, sailing east. Within a few years they had formed a new home for themselves around the city of Pentos. The island feel to desertion and became a nest for pirates before its conquest by House Hoare.
Over the centuries, the realms of Westeros continued to fall into their endless traps of war and infighting, and the main benefactors of the distrust and chaos remained the Iron men. Massey's Hook, Duskendale, Crackclaw Point, and castles as far south as the edges of the Kingswood have fallen under their slow but relentless aggression.
As House Hoare waxes, House Durrandon of Storm's End wanes, its thinly populated lands unable to yield the armies required to fight off attacks from land and sea and mountain. Endless efforts at counterattacks stall in the lands to their north, or are ended by distractions in the Marches or at the endless border with the Reach.
To the south, Dorne flourishes under the trade of the Free Cities, as well as their relative distance from the aggressive Hoares. With few resources worth pillaging and their most valuable lands inland, the Martells have crafted a sustainable economy, sending mercenaries across the southern kingdoms.
Dorne's chief rivals, the Gardeners and Hightowers of the Reach, are the breadbasket of Westeros and the home to its most famous cavalry, the Order of the Green Hand. The paladins defend the roads and byways from bandits and raiders alike, but the sheer breadth of their lands and its abundant resources makes them prime targets for endless reaving and attacks from Hoare or Lannister or Martell.
Finally, the Lannisters of Casterly Rock remain the richest family in Westeros, their mines supplying the kingdoms with gold and allowing them to maintain the largest full time army on the continent.
Into this maelstrom lies risk and opportunity, as adventurers, knights, lords, ladies and spies continue the neverending game that makes the world go round.
