Background:
Tybalt was born the third child of King Harys Lannister, the second of his mother Alyssa Marbrand, and her eldest son. Unlike his half brother Willem, Tybalt was physically unimposing, and from his earliest memories his brothers size intimidated him. While lacking physically, his fear developed into a natural cunning, that his mother did well to nurture. Tybalt was only four years of age when Willem was sent away, and while years later his mother would always deny it, Tybalt was certain she was behind his seeming exile.
The seven years Willem was away, Tybalt initially expected to be educated in combat, but this never happened. In his mothers words 'You will never be strong like your half brother, so the time is better spent on your mind', and so he did. He would always be a danger to his Willem's claim, so it was foolish to hope for good will. Instead he had to be useful, and smart enough that when his brother took the throne, Tybalt would not join his father. He learnt to trust no-ones intentions, and that it was better to prepare for the worst than hope for the best.
When Willem returned to Casterly Rock after seven years, Tybalt put a new face to his fears. Willem was no longer just bigger, but everything that had previously stood as intimidating seemed enhanced, escalated by the understanding his mother had imparted. For the duration of Willem's short stay, Tybalt kept his distance, observing while trying not to stand out.
With Willem's departure, Tybalt became all the more aware of his fragile place. His father hardly cared now, when dead he would be no protection for Tybalt. Thus as his mother shifted her attention to teaching the same lessons to Tybalts younger siblings, he came to focus on figuring out how he might achieve security of his own place. By default he turned to reading about war, from which he primarily observed how information was gathered. This obsession with knowing enough to predict others shifted from an academic interest to a paranoid obsession, particularly as stories of Willem's successes trickled back to Casterly Rock.
Since Willem's return and falling out with the King, Tybalt has become yet more worried. He thinks his mother was involved, but if so, she never told him, something which has him worried. This led him to become more isolated from her as well, suspicious of everyone around him. He found himself an interest in engineering and siege warfare, partly out of his new obsession with security, but equally as a reason to leave the Rock for study. These times just so happened to be when his older brother was visiting.
