Perceon shrugged. "Probably. I'm sure Geralt would save them for me. I'd only get in the way and make things worse. That was someting you surely thought in not telling me what was happening." He indicated pointedly. "Of course I would want to help save someone i cared about. But what we want to do is rarely what we should do. Geralt and father will return with Lilith soon enough. Your being there would change nothing."

The anger slowly began to drain out of her. "It would make me feel better," she said. "That's not nothing. I'm just...sick of Father and Geralt treating me like I'm not capable of looking after myself and people I care about, when they know perfectly well I am." She paused. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I wanted to, but I was so worried for Lilith I had to hurry. I fetched Geralt because I knew he'd bring men."

"It matters not." Perceon responded. "You were right to get Geralt, just as Geralt and father were right to go themselves. The rumours of you fighting unsavory men would spread quickly, and all your suitors might disappear. It is better this way."

She didn't look impressed. "It doesn't feel better," she said. "And it probably never will."

Perceon shook his head. "You say that now Melissa, but in four years when you are with some choice man, you will be grateful you have no horrible scar that might have stopped your match."

"I'm a princess," she said. "Men would want to marry me even if I had a face full of pox scars." Then she sighed. "Sorry, Percy, I shouldn't take my frustrations out on you. I'm just so tired of all this. Father's been good to me, letting me carry a sword, but I still have to be careful about when and where. I know I could be capable of so much more if only I had the right opportunities. And it hurts to be left behind just because I'm a girl."

"I'm a man and i was left behind. You being a woman is not the only reason you are not there. And those men you speak of would marry you only for your title." Perceon responded. "Is that a marriage you want? Everything that has been done has occurred with your best intentions in mind. And it is not as if your sole pursuit is swordplay. There are plenty of things you are able to do in public without any problems or risks."

She thought of her shameful secret yet again and winced. "There are many things I could do, yes, but swordplay is my greatest joy and I cannot give it up. As for marriage, it's something I must do, not something I choose to do. We all must, whether we wish it or not. "

"Come Melissa, stop being so stubborn." Perceon responded. "Nobody wishes to be alone. You may not have met a man who interests you yet, but how many men have you truly met?"

"Enough," she said. "I just don't think I'm the kind of girl who falls head over heels in love. Do you remember how Florys and Alys were always mooning after some man or other when they were twelve or thirteen? I never did that, not even when I got older. I doubt I ever will. Friendship is the best I shall hope for."

"You are angry and saying foolish things." Perceon responded, not making things much better. "Florys and Alys were not in love. They were just being silly girls. Just because you are not a fool does not mean you cannot fall in love. But it is late and this is not the time for this conversation. I will take my leave since I am doing no good here."

She smiled weakly at him. "Thank you. I know you mean well, Percy, I really do. But I'm tired of everyone talking about my marriage so much, as if it's the only thing of worth I will ever do. I know it's important, but it's not everything. But you're right, let's get some rest."

Perceon nodded. "Let me know when Lilith returns." He said, before leaving.
